East Hampton

Three gunshots were heard near Oakview Highway on Friday around 8 p.m., but the woman who had called about it did not want to talk to police when they arrived to investigate.

A dilapidated boat "covered in trash," and a trailer with flat tires were towed away from a no-parking zone on Cross Highway near Route 27 on the evening of Oct. 19, though not before police added a parking ticket to the trash. The boat was found to be registered to Jose Barreto Jr. of New Jersey.

A short car chase involving town police cars and a white Toyota Suburban began on Spinner Lane on the afternoon of Oct. 9 and ended somewhere near Oakview Highway after winding through other village roads. The driver was later determined to be an unlicensed 16-year-old who had left the scene of a reportable accident. Town police said only that an arrest was made.

East Hampton Village

What police called "a small motor vehicle" damaged grass at the Nature Trail early Sunday evening. Photos were taken and forwarded to police.

Also at the Nature Trail and possibly connected, three wooden benches were found in the duck pond just before 1 a.m. on Monday. Police retrieved the sodden benches and reported that none appeared damaged.

After a rear-end collision at the intersection of Woods and Toilsome Lanes on Friday morning between a 2018 Ford Explorer and a yellow and gray Subaru pickup, both drivers agreed to pull in to the nearby Apple Bank parking lot to exchange insurance information. As the Explorer driver, who was rear-ended, was parking, she told police, the other woman took off westbound on Montauk Highway.

After "vehicle parts" were spotted Saturday morning at the intersection of James and Dunemere Lanes, police tracked down the owner, a 70-year-old East Hampton man, and left him a voice-mail message letting him know they had recovered his property.

Police intercepted a 58-year-old New York City woman who was on her way to the library Friday morning after a 71-year-old man called to say she had been walking across his property. After the woman explained that she was new in town, officers gave her directions to the library, but did not throw the book at her for trespassing.

An East Hampton man found a set of keys, including a car key to a Toyota, next to the Georgica Beach shower last Thursday morning, and turned them in to police for safekeeping.

A Mill Hill Lane woman reported that her neighbor was draining water from a swimming pool onto her property on the morning of Oct. 19. Police turned off the water pump but could not locate the homeowner.

A Widewheel scooter reported as lost was found by police on the morning of Oct. 18, leaning against an outside wall at Stop and Shop, and returned to its owner.

Montauk

A man who entered the I.G.A. on the afternoon of Oct. 9 was "visibly intoxicated," according to a concerned caller, who told police she was worried that he might have driven a car there. Police interviewed the man, a 28-year-old from Lindenhurst, who told them he was working in the hamlet and staying at the nearby Royal Atlantic and that he had walked to the I.G.A. and planned to walk back to his room.

Patricia Macarthy took a walk on Ditch Plain beach on Oct. 18 and realized later that her iPhone was missing. She tried using the Find My Phone app, and told police it first pinged near her Montauk residence and then pinged again "somewhere in the East Hampton area." The phone has apparently not been recovered.

Northwest Harbor

Gunshots were reported near North Hollow Drive just before Saturday midnight and again half an hour later, but all was quiet by the time police arrived.

Sag Harbor

A caller reported water draining into Lighthouse Lane on the evening of Oct. 19, and police contacted the homeowner, who told the manager of the pool-maintenance company to shut down the pump.

Another such violation of village code was called in that same night at about the same time, 7:30 p.m., on Robeson Boulevard. The homeowner claimed ignorance of the code and turned off the pump.

A caller complained about a loud exhaust fan at LT Burger on the night of Oct. 18, telling police that the fan is not usually running during during off hours and is not usually so loud. LT Burger is currently closed and undergoing renovations.

Kids skateboarding at the harbormaster building on Bay Street may have damaged a guardrail there on the evening of Oct. 17. The youths denied it, but were told to skateboard someplace else.

Annabelle, a dog, was wandering around town unleashed when Joanne Wintjen of Main Street notified police Sunday evening. They called the phone number on the dog's collar and reunited her with her owner.

A woman thought an intruder might have entered her Main Street house through the back door Sunday night, and called police, who affirmed that the back door was open, but by the wind.

On Oct. 3, after receiving an email that appeared to come from his boss, a Hempstead Street man bought four Apple gift cards from the East Hampton CVS at $200 each and, as instructed, forwarded the numbers to the boss for redemption. After he spent $800 on the cards and provided his boss with the numbers, the boss said he had asked for nothing of the sort and that the man had been scammed. Apple refunded $200 of the money; the scammers had already spent the rest.

Springs

Sebastiano Lourerro of Manor Lane was reading a book on Friday night when he reported hearing two loud bangs, sounding, he told police, like an electrical or gas explosion. Police found nothing explosive, nor anyone else who had heard loud noises.

Andrew Herrera-Correa was observed shellfishing off Gerard Drive Sunday afternoon and couldn't produce the required town shellfish permit when approached by Marine Patrol. He was ticketed.

A 22-foot center console boat belonging to Bruce Sasso of Amagansett was reported sunken at Sunset Cove Marina on Oct. 18. Police interviewed the marina owner, John Nicholas, who said Mr. Sasso, 72, was aware of the condition of his boat and that Mr. Sasso's insurance company was on the case.

Wainscott

A Maidstone Gun Club member, Anjos Leandro, 42, reported hearing multiple gunshots "directly behind" the Daniel's Hole Road gun club at around 5 p.m. last Thursday. Police scoured the area in a 4x4 vehicle but could not determine the source.

A 75-year-old local man told town police on Oct. 13 that he had been defrauded, after discovering someone had deposited a check for more than $2,000 from his Citibank account into another account the week before. The Citibank branch in Wainscott was notified of the situation, which is said to have involved digitally altered checks, and it froze the transaction. The money was refunded to its owner, who has filed forgery and grand larceny complaints.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County

East Hampton and Amagansett firefighters volunteered to head north last week to help fight a 5,000-acre wildfire in Orange County, N.Y., not once but twice, battling unfamiliar terrain to do so. “They fight fires completely differently than we do when we have a brush fire,” the Amagansett chief said.
