Had His Uncle’s Permission?

Thu, 12/22/2022 - 09:28

A family dispute in August over a check-writing incident led to the arrest last Thursday of Erik Thompson of Sag Harbor, 39, on charges of grand larceny.

Sag Harbor police reported this week that Mr. Thompson had written himself checks this summer from the joint account of his now-deceased uncle, Matthew McAree, and Mr. McAree’s wife, Andrea, also residents of the village. Mr. Thompson wrote two checks for himself totaling $1,150, police said.

When confronted by his family about the checks, Mr. Thompson said his uncle had given him permission to write them, so that he could settle a debt with a “bad person.” Police, however, determined that Mr. McAree had given no such permission, and in the days leading up to his death this summer, would have been in no condition to make such an authorization.

Mr. Thompson is due to be arraigned in Southampton Justice Court tomorrow.

Two East Hampton men were charged with criminal trespass last week in separate incidents.

East Hampton Town police charged William Donnelly, 41, with a class-B misdemeanor after he allegedly attempted to enter a residence on Gladstone Place in Montauk on the afternoon of Dec. 14. Police said Mr. Donnelly walked into the backyard and attempted to open a door at the back of the house.

Milton Yanchaguano-Changoluiza, 34, was charged last Thursday evening with a class-A criminal trespass misdemeanor after he allegedly entered a house on Boatheader’s Lane in East Hampton without permission and refused to leave, “placing his foot in the path of the door and not allowing it to close.
