Half a Dozen Significant Accidents

Thu, 07/14/2022 - 10:08

East Hampton Town and Village police reported half a dozen significant accidents on local roads last week.

Alexandra Colonna was making a right turn from Three Mile Harbor Road onto Harbor Boulevard in Springs on Sunday night when Ryan Bratter of Manorville drove onto the shoulder, trying to get around her Jeep but instead, police said, causing a collision. Neither driver was hurt.

As Katherine Ann Palmer returned to her Subaru, parked early Saturday evening on Atlantic Drive in East Hampton, two good Samaritans approached from the beach and told her they had seen a car back into hers and leave the scene. Officers followed up and found the other driver, who said he thought he had hit a sand berm.

Dennis Huang was westbound and, by his own admission, speeding on Old Montauk Highway in Montauk late Saturday afternoon when his 2018 Lexus struck two cars stopped in traffic ahead of him. Mr. Huang told police he had swerved onto the shoulder to avoid an accident, but hit a tree and then rear-ended the vehicle in front of him. That collision caused his car to spin and hit the second car. No injuries were reported.

Katherine Ziavras of Manhattan crashed her 2020 BMW into a wooden fence on the Circle in East Hampton on July 5. She told police she had accidentally stepped on the gas while pulling into a parking spot. The fence was badly damaged, as was the Beemer’s front bumper.

Franaldo Hanna, who fell asleep at the wheel on July 5 on Montauk Highway in East Hampton and slammed his 2011 BMW into Stuart Weisberg’s 2018 Mercedes, told police he had worked a long day. Mr. Hanna awoke just in time to see Mr. Weisberg slowing down, he said, but not in time to avoid a rear-end collision.

Juan Varon, a passenger in a disabled 2017 Infiniti stranded on Middle Highway in East Hampton at about 10:30 p.m. on July 5, told police that the Infiniti’s missing driver had hit a tree after swerving to avoid a deer. The driver, who an “uncooperative” Mr. Varon said he knew only by “Christian,” had fled the scene following the mishap.
