East Hampton Village

Police were called around 10:30 p.m. on July 3 to the Double RL store on Main Street, where a passer-by had complained that a private security company was blocking off a public sidewalk. A security guard explained that there was a private event going on in the store, and he was trying to stop people from entering. He “was unaware that the sidewalk was public property,” he told police.

Last Thursday morning police caught up with a 60-year-old man who’d been walking on Newtown Lane with his pants falling down. He told them he was “fine, and would hold onto his pants the best he could.” Officers advised him that “a belt would be helpful.”

Police scolded two teenagers who were seen climbing the pavilion at Main Beach at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Their parents picked them up without incident. No damage was reported.

A 32-year-old Hampton Bays man was charged last Thursday at Wiborg’s Beach with a misdemeanor count of public lewdness after a woman accused him of masturbating and exposing his genitals. The man told police he’d simply been rubbing sunscreen on. He was taken to headquarters, where he reportedly refused to give a statement.

A 29-year-old Southampton man got trapped in his car, which had rolled onto its side after striking a parked car, in a Saturday-night crash in front of the library. A fire department crew freed him, and he was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment of injuries. At the hospital, he was arrested and charged with three misdemeanors: unlicensed driving, aggravated unlicensed driving, and driving without a court-mandated ignition interlock device.

Montauk

Four men waiting for an Uber in the middle of the road were involved in a fight on the night of July 3 near the Star Island Yacht Club. One of them, police said, punched the side of a pickup truck whose driver had been honking at them to get out of his way. A passenger in the truck then got out and punched the puncher. No charges were filed.

Sag Harbor

A gray pickup truck struck the columns of a Main Street house on the afternoon of July 3, causing damage, and the driver then fled the scene. A witness described the incident to the homeowner, who called the police but declined to press charges.

Three pieces of outdoor furniture with a combined value of about $7,500 were reported missing from a Hampton Street house on July 4. The homeowner, who is in the process of moving and putting things in a storage unit, told police he’d last seen the items three weeks ago, when he was last at the house.

A Marine Patrol officer saw three teens jump into the water off the bridge to North Haven at around noon on July 5. Their parents were notified.

A 72-year-old village resident was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital on Friday evening for treatment of a serious dog bite. The man told police his dog had been fighting with another dog on Bay Street and he’d been bitten while trying to break it up.

Two officers canvassed the village Sunday morning and picked up 24 road signs advertising a government property auction.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
