Wed, 07/26/2023 - 17:56

Two motorcycle crashes, as well as one accident involving a pedestrian and another involving a bicyclist, were reported here in the last several days. All four resulted in injuries.

On Monday, a county police helicopter airlifted a driver to Stony Brook University Hospital after a car and a motorcycle collided just before 7 a.m. at the corner of Montauk Highway and Cobb Road in Water Mill. “No criminality is suspected at this time,” Southampton Town police said in a statement on Tuesday. Police did not identify either driver.

On the morning of July 18, Juan Lopezgallego of East Hampton, 27, who was driving a “nearly-brand-new” Suzuki motorcycle, struck a deer on Jenny’s Path near Stokes Court. He was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for injuries to his arm and shoulder.

Three days later, on Springs-Fireplace Road near Teak Lane in Springs, Nicholas Morena of Hollywood, Calif., allegedly hit a jogger, Russell Klein of East Hampton. A woman told East Hampton Town police that Mr. Morena, who was driving a 2022 Mercury, had crossed the double-yellow line to pass her car on the left “at a high rate of speed” moments before the accident. Mr. Klein, 53, was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment of a leg injury. Mr. Morena, 42, denied striking Mr. Klein with his car. No tickets were issued.

Another driver, Donaldo Arias of Riverhead, reportedly struck a bicyclist as he pulled into the Water Street Shops parking lot in Sag Harbor on Friday afternoon. The bicyclist, a 37-year-old woman whom police did not identify, had only minor injuries and was treated at the scene by a Sag Harbor ambulance E.M.T.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County

East Hampton and Amagansett firefighters volunteered to head north last week to help fight a 5,000-acre wildfire in Orange County, N.Y., not once but twice, battling unfamiliar terrain to do so. “They fight fires completely differently than we do when we have a brush fire,” the Amagansett chief said.
