Arrests in Cooking-Oil Thefts

Wed, 08/02/2023 - 17:58

Following an ongoing investigation into thefts from restaurants of used cooking oil, which is considered a valuable commodity that is frequently sold to biodiesel fuel refineries, two UpIsland men have been arrested. They are charged with multiple counts of misdemeanor petty larceny and one count each of third-degree criminal mischief with intent to damage another person’s property, a felony.

East Hampton Town police arrested Wilson I. Reyes-Escobar of Bay Shore, 29, and Hector G. Umanzor-Cabrera of Brentwood, 34, at about 5 a.m. on July 24 at Goldberg’s Famous Bagels in Wainscott. They are accused of stealing about 100 gallons of used cooking oil and causing more than $800 in damage to the oil container.

The same two men had been arrested last September by Suffolk County police and charged with petty larceny in connection with the thefts of used cooking oil in Kings Park. They will be arraigned on Wednesday in Town Justice Court.

In other police news, a California woman was charged with two counts of driving while intoxicated, misdemeanors, and a felony count of criminal possession of stolen property, following a car crash in Wainscott on July 25.

Police said that Ashley Hayes Goodrich-Mahoney of Los Angeles, 40, was driving a gray 2021 Honda Odyssey that did not belong to her at the time of the crash, which occurred on Montauk Highway near Wainscott Northwest Road at 6:20 p.m. The car had been reported stolen within Southampton Town police jurisdiction earlier in the day, according to the report.

Ms. Goodrich-Mahoney reportedly failed field sobriety tests, and police said a breath test produced a blood-alcohol reading over twice the legal level. East Hampton Town Justice Lisa R. Rana released her on her own recognizance during her arraignment on July 26; she is due back in court on Aug. 24.
