Biscuit the Dog Takes a Trip

A Yorkshire terrier inadvertently rode a westbound bus from the Bridgehampton train station to Babylon on Sunday afternoon without its family, prompting an unusual “lost dog” search that spanned multiple police agencies.

According to Southampton Town police, a local woman and her 16-year-old son were at the Bridgehampton train station around 1 p.m. Sunday, waiting for the son to catch a westbound train. However, police said, they discovered that South Fork trains were not running that day. Instead, buses were running along the routes where train service had been paused.

“As the pair tried to clarify what needed to be done, their traveling companion, Biscuit, an 8-year-old Yorkshire terrier who was quietly relaxing in his pet carrier, was unknowingly loaded onto the bus,” police said in a release. “The complainant and her son regrouped and decided not to take the bus, and, in the confusion, they did not realize the dog was loaded and left.”

The mother called 911, and officers sprang into action. “Southampton Town police dispatchers began to call multiple agencies in an effort to try to locate the bus and find an agency to assist in locating the small dog. . . . Fortunately, contact was made with [the] Babylon Village code enforcement agency, who responded to the Babylon train station, where Biscuit was located safe and soundly.”

The dog was later reunited with its family.

“No one wants to get out of bed, having just climbed in. And it’s a really cold night, and it’s windy, and everything else — but you know that everyone else will be feeling the same, and so you go anyway. Everyone jumps in their cars and drives there, and then you deal with whatever is going on.”
