The owner of a popular water recreation business was killed while riding his skateboard on Middle Line Highway in Noyac on Friday evening.
The Southampton Town Police Department said Charles Robbins Reid III, 54, was headed east on Middle Line Highway near Fourteen Hills Court when he was struck by a 2018 Land Rover shortly before 6 p.m. The Southampton Volunteer Ambulance company took him to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Mr. Reid, who was called Robb, came to the East End from the Orlando, Fla., area. In 2001, he founded Global Boarding, which offered lessons and equipment rentals for wakeboarding, waterskiing, paddleboarding, and other activities. According to his website, he held a record as a professional wakeboarder for the highest jump. Last year, Dan's Papers called Mr. Reid a trailblazer in wakeboarding and reported that had been nominated for the Wakesports Hall of Fame.
Middle Line Highway, which stretches from Sag Harbor, through Noyac, to North Sea, is a hilly road with multiple peaks and valleys and no defined shoulders.
The driver in the incident was Stephen Breitenbach, 77, of Water Mill, who remained on scene. Police said "criminality is not suspected" in the crash.
