Man Found Dead in Montauk

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 11:44

A woman out for a walk found the body of a Middle Island man in front of a house on Industrial Road near Navy Road in Montauk on the morning of Jan. 21, East Hampton Town police said this week.

The family of Naseem Y. Hamzah, 39, had previously reported him missing to East Hampton Village police.

The East Hampton Press reported that before village police issued a  missing-person bulletin, a village officer had given the man a ride to the train station, where he apparently boarded an eastbound train instead of the westbound train.

According to Detective Sgt. Ryan Hogan of the town police, investigators were able to confirm, via Long Island Rail Road surveillance footage, that it was the same man who then arrived in Montauk and left the railroad station on foot.

The village police department could not be reached for comment this week, but told The Press that Mr. Hamzah had a “diagnosed mental disorder” that the officers were not aware of at the time they gave him a lift.

Detective Sgt. Hogan said the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office is still investigating the cause of death.

Montauk Parade Security Top of Mind
