A car crashed into the exterior of the Zadig and Voltaire boutique at the corner of Main Street and the Circle in East Hampton Village around on Saturday morning, smashing a display window. Although the accident caused some commotion on a busy Main Street, with the Ladies Village Improvement Society fair ongoing a few blocks away and many shoppers enjoying the sunshine, East Hampton Village police reported no injuries at the scene and no major damage to the inside of the building.

According to Sgt. Sean Christian, the department's sergeant on duty, the driver was attempting to make a U-turn when another car approached quickly, leading him to divert course into the corner of the store.

“The manager and an employee were both in the building,” Sergeant Christian said. “Luckily, the store hadn’t opened yet and they were in the back.” The structural integrity of the building appeared intact — pending inspection — and while initially there was concern about a gas pipe inside the building, police said it was undamaged.

Contractors were on the premises within an hour of the accident to begin cleaning up the mess. “It could’ve been a lot worse,” Sergeant Christian said. “Thank God it wasn’t.”
