The East Hampton Town Police Department announced this week that it is now accepting applications for its 2025 Citizens Academy, which is intended to give residents insight into how local police departments operate.

Beginning on March 5, participants will learn about topics including crime scene investigation, laws of arrest, virtual firearms training, use of force, and domestic violence. For more hands-on learning, the police will offer a ride-along with an officer, time at the Suffolk County Police Firearms Training Section, and a tour of police headquarters in Wainscott.

The program will run for 10 sessions from March 5 to May 14, with one to two classes per week from 6 to 9 p.m. By the end of the program, the department hopes that participants will have a greater understanding of the role of police in the community.

To register, participants must be residents of East Hampton Town, be over 17, and have a driver’s license. The deadline to apply is Feb. 26, and additional information can be obtained by calling 631-537-7575, extension 542.
