D.W.I. Charge Follows Turnpike Crash

Thu, 02/20/2025 - 08:10

East Hampton Town police responded Saturday night to an accident on Route 114, at the Stonewall Court intersection. The driver, Matthew Hugo Morales of Sag Harbor, 35, told officers he’d lost control of his 2005 Chevrolet S.U.V., which left the road, hit a utility pole, and wound up in the woods, injuring both himself and his passenger.

Mr. Morales claimed that the weather and icy roads led to the crash, but police said he had failed a roadside sobriety test. He sustained a head injury with minor bleeding, they said, but remained conscious. His passenger, Kaitlyn Kelly, 38, was found to be semiconscious and reported stomach pains. Both were taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital via ambulance.

Mr. Morales was charged with driving while intoxicated, a first-offense misdemeanor. He is due for arraignment in East Hampton Town Justice Court on Feb. 26. According to the police report, his car was “demolished,” and was towed to Springs Fireplace Auto Collision.

Another recent accident, involving three cars and one injury, happened on the afternoon of Feb. 4 at the intersection of Town Lane and Spring Close Highway in East Hampton. Town police reported that Margaret Gage of Sag Harbor, 79, had crossed the lane, collided with a car driven by Rosa Reyes-Castro, 51, of Riverhead, and then crashed into a second vehicle, driven by Monica Parejavargas, 53, of Yaphank. Ms. Gage told police she could not remember much about the incident.

Ms. Parejavargas stated that she was stopped at the intersection and looking both ways when she saw Ms. Gage hit Ms. Reyes-Castro’s car and then hit hers. Both Ms. Gage’s car and Ms. Reyes-Castro’s sustained damage to the front passenger sides and were towed to V & V Auto in Amagansett. Ms. Parejavargas’s car was damaged on the front driver’s side.

Ms. Reyes-Castro was transported by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital after reporting pain in her stomach.
