Shoplifter Hits Sag Harbor Store

Thu, 02/27/2025 - 10:52

Update, Friday, Feb. 28, 11 a.m.: The clothing shop LoveShackFancy on Madison Street in Sag Harbor reported two separate thefts over the weekend.

On Saturday evening, a woman was in the store with her child when an employee approached them to say that the child’s missing wallet had been found on the floor in a different part of the store. Forty dollars was found to be missing when the wallet was opened.

The employee then checked the store’s surveillance camera. The security footage first showed the wallet lying on a table near the front door of the store.

A woman was then seen picking it up, opening it, removing the money, and then setting it back down in the same place. That same woman then went to the employee to report the wallet’s location.

The footage then showed her leaving the store in the company of an older woman. Using an outdoor camera, Sag Harbor Village police spotted the pair walking north from the store before moving out of view. As of press time they have not been found.

On Sunday evening, a dress valued at $595 was stolen from LoveShackFancy. An employee told police that a woman had taken the dress off the rack, gone into the changing room, and “without closing the curtain” placed the dress into a blue bag.

She then walked about the store for a few more minutes, the employee said, before walking out without paying for the pink-and-white floral dress, labeled as a “Theodore Dress.” The store features a dress of a similar description online.

Police canvassed the area looking for the person without success. But on Thursday afternoon around 2, village police arrested a person in connection with the theft on Sunday at Grindstone Coffee and Donuts on Main Street.

The person had yet to be arraigned or even put on the docket to be seen before a judge as of Friday morning.
