Three Days, Two Accidents

One driver had whiplash and another wound up with a fractured leg over the weekend, following accidents in Springs and Northwest.

On Friday afternoon, Marco Garnicasegarra of Flanders, 26, driving a 2007 Honda pickup truck, was stopped on Springs-Fireplace Road waiting to turn left onto Harbor Boulevard, when Angel Farez of East Hampton, 53, in a 2005 Toyota pickup, drove hard into the rear of the Honda, causing damage to both trucks, front and back.

Mr. Garnicasegarra was badly shaken up and complained of whiplash. A Springs ambulance took him to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment.

A more serious accident occurred on Sunday evening. Arelitza Mayi of East Hampton, 27, driving a 2004 Chevrolet sedan, was on Hand’s Creek Road when, at the intersection with Timberline Road, she realized one of the car’s wheels was wobbling.

She later told East Hampton Town police that the wobbling had caused her to lose control of the car, which hit a tree and rolled over. Its front was “demolished,” according to the report, and Ms. Mayi fractured her leg in the crash.

She too was transported to the hospital; her car was towed to Springs Auto Repair.

On the Lookout for Ghost Plates

“People buy illegal temporary tags online, and they get away with it until police suspect something fishy about the plate, or until they’re stopped for an ordinary traffic infraction,” according to East Hampton Village Det. Sgt. Jennifer Dunn. That was the case last week, when a temporary tag led police to discover that the vehicle's registration was apparently fraudulent.
