A 19-year-old East Hampton man was charged last week with two counts of statutory rape involving a 13-year-old girl.
Omar E. Leon-Saldana raped the girl in Cedar Point County Park in April and inside his home on Banks Court in May, East Hampton Town Police Captain Chris Anderson said. He was arrested on June 25 after the victim spoke with police. State law protects her identity.
Mr. Leon-Saldana is charged with two counts of second-degree rape, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. A person is guilty of second-degree rape when they are 18 or older and engage in sexual intercourse with someone under 14.
Justice Steven Tekulsky arraigned the accused in East Hampton Town Justice Court on June 26 and set bail at $10,000 cash, which Mr. Leon-Saldana posted. He also has a pending charge against him from June 9 of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, after town police found him asleep in the driver’s seat with the engine running, on the side of Accabonac Road in East Hampton. He is due back in court on all charges on July 11.
Springs Arrest
On June 24, when officers were called to a house on Eighth Street in Springs in response to a domestic dispute, a man allegedly pulled a knife on them. Jamian Robert Leland, 24, held a stainless-steel serrated kitchen knife with a 12-inch blade in his right hand, according to his arrest report.
He refused to show his hands and drop the knife, putting Sgt. Kenneth Alversa and Officer Grace Peterson in fear for their safety, the report said. A Taser was deployed and he dropped the knife, allowing police to take him into custody, Captain Anderson said.
Mr. Leland was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for evaluation, and later released with an appearance ticket. He is due in Justice Court next Thursday to be arraigned on misdemeanor charges of menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.
Child Endangerment Charged
An East Hampton mother who reportedly left her four children home alone overnight on June 19 was charged the next day with four misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Edith Najera, 35, was arrested on June 20 after police discovered that the children, ages 3, 4, 11, and 14, had been left without adult supervision the night before and into the morning hours. Police, who were notified by child protective services, reportedly found food in the refrigerator was spoiled and there were piles of trash throughout the house, on Abraham’s Path.
A sergeant released Ms. Najera on her own recognizance with an order to appear in court on Wednesday.
