Wake-Up Call for New Shop

    When Beth Lee Schlendorf purchased a memory foam mattress a couple of years ago, she had no idea that it would spark an idea to start a business. The synthetic slab, which she later discovered comprised more than 60 chemicals, was so smelly that she was warned by the store she purchased it from to air it out for between 24 and 48 hours. When she began to get headaches she was struck by the idea that she and her family were spending a third of their lives sleeping on a possibly toxic soup. It was a wake-up call that put her on a mission to find out what mattresses are made of.

Cook Travel Merges Offices

    After more than 20 years in South­ampton, Cook Travel abandoned its office there last month and merged it with its Main Street, East Hampton, office, where it was founded in 1984. The agency still has offices in New York and Greenport.

    “Customers rarely walk into the office for travel help these days,” said Audrey Lyons, a leisure specialist at the company. “Because of Google, our customers come from all over the world. Most of them contact us by phone or email.”

The Return of the Handmade

    For those looking for the perfect holiday gift for a best friend, sweetheart, or favorite teacher, Deborah Aiza of Sweet ’Tauk has reopened Handmade for the Holidays at 32 South Etna Avenue in Montauk near the Naturally Good health food store. “We have something for everyone,” Ms. Aiza said.

    The venture was so successful last year that Ms. Aiza called in her farmers market buddies from across the South Fork and asked if they wanted to sell from the store, which will revert back to the Red Hook Lobster Pound next summer.

    White’s in East Hampton was sold in August, but longtime customers of both the pharmacy and cosmetics departments will be happy to learn that much of what they love about the store is expected to remain under the new ownership — including its pharmacist, Vincent Alibrandi.

    Mr. Alibrandi, the store’s former owner, was at his post on Nov. 8 as Diana Dolling-Ross, the marketing director for Nyco Chemists, which has similar shops in Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo, talked about plans for the store, which she called “an icon.”
