Water Quality

    Quogue

    August 27, 2012

Dear David,

In response to Matthew Sprung’s Aug. 16 article “Algal Tides Threaten Local Waters,” I offer the following:

Nitrogen and phosphorus pollution is the leading cause of water-quality impairments in the United States. With the thousands of residences existing within our region’s watersheds, the collective nitrogen loadings add up.

Our bays were once known for clear waters, vast underwater eelgrass meadows, and abundant shellfish harvests.

Two Days

    East Hampton

    August 19, 2012

To the Editor:

The bemoaning of the dirt, noise, and traffic by the couple in last week’s Star prompted me to take a drive down Daniel’s Lane in Sagaponack. Indeed, it is true. That street is a slum.

I recalled the time I first started work on Butter Lane in Bridgehampton. Across the street was a potato-sorting barn and every fall its machinery would crank up in the morning.

People Who Care

    Springs

    August 13, 2012

Dear Editor,

There are caring people in this town.

Last Sunday our sheltie, Misty, who is 141/2 years old and deaf, got out of the yard and decided to take herself for a walk. After a couple of hours, which felt like forever, a wonderful couple with a white car was waiting by our house with our Misty. The couple found her over by Glade Road and brought her home. Thank you so much for caring to return Misty to us.

For Nancy

    Springs

    July 3, 2012

Dear Editor,

We recently attended the lovely and moving memorial service for Nancy Kane. She was such a vibrant person and one of our library’s first and most loyal supporters and volunteers.

Best Show Ever

    East Hampton

    July 22, 2012

Dear Editor,

Last night we saw fireworks over Three Mile Harbor hosted by the Clamshell Foundation. The fireworks were unique and colorful. This was the best show ever. We were lucky to be able to enjoy such a display in such a beautiful setting.

Facing Traffic

    Sagaponack

    July 16, 2012

To the Editor:

The editorial in the July 12 issue of The East Hampton Star is important. I would just like to add that if the following rule were adopted and adhered to, perhaps, some of these tragic incidents could be avoided: Pedestrians should walk in single file facing traffic, and bicyclists should ride in single file with traffic.

Killing Season

    Springs

    July 1, 2012

To the Editor,

To whom the rules do not apply: At the beginning of every summer season for at least the last 15 years, I’ve told myself I should write a letter to the editor reminding people about the rules of the road. But I never have. Until this year. The death of that high school student on Old Stone Highway was the catalyst. I was diverted both going to, and hours later, coming from Atlantic Avenue Beach that day because of that particular accident.

Taxi Situation

    East Hampton

    June 28, 2012

Dear Editor,

The death last week of the young man who was struck and killed by a taxi on Old Stone Highway and your editorial “Thoughts After a Death,” provoked me to write you about the taxi situation on the East End.

Over the years we’ve watched each summer the influx of both taxi companies and individual taxis on our streets in greater numbers.

Out of Their Way

    East Hampton

     June 11, 2012

Dear Readers:

A week ago Sunday I was out and about doing errands and lost two letters, ready for mailing, from my purse. Of course, they contained checks, and of course, it was raining, so they got wet if they were dropped outside, and of course it was Sunday and the post office was closed.

Its Fair Share

    Springs

    June 4, 2012

Dear David,

Back in the day (Bastille Day, that is), it was quite a show, with George Plimpton and, later, James Lipton, dedicating the shells. We sat in boats and gave money for a great night; other times we went ashore and gave more money to be on the grounds for a good cause, Boys Harbor. Then it all just ended almost abruptly.

The Clamshell Foundation came to the rescue, no questions asked.

Safe for All

    Sag Harbor

    May 27, 2012

Dear David:

Your column, “Bad Mileage,” of May 17, seems to have anticipated something in today’s New York Times: “This Is How We Ride.”

How we ride is of some concern to me as I am both a cyclist and a motorist and believe it is of utmost importance that our roads be safe for all.

A Special Day

    East Hampton

    May 21, 2012

To the Editor,

Memorial Day is a special day on which we honor those who died in service to our nation. We see Petty Officer Michael Monsoor, Lt. Michael Murphy, Lance Corporal Jordon Haerter, or Lt. Joe Theinert, all of whom  sacrificed their lives in the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. We also see the faces of military nurses, who through many wars and conflicts provided care amid chaos.

Saved the Dock

    East Hampton

    May 14, 2012

Dear David,

Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful, amazing members of the Montauk Fire Department. They saved the dock area from what could have been an unimaginable disaster. The Montauk fish dock caught fire at 3 Friday morning. It was discovered by a young fisherman, Billy Carmen, and Kelly Lester, who were getting ready to set sail.

Despite the devastation of the total destruction of the building, no one was injured in any way.

    May 7, 2012

Dear David,

Please accept this letter of thanks on behalf of my family to the many people who walked and ran in the Second Annual Katy’s Courage 5K. We appreciate their participation and smiles.

We thank all of Kate’s many friends. Nina Landi shared her expertise, calm demeanor, and time to organize and oversee the smooth running of the race day machinations.

Amazing Tribute

    East Hampton

    April 23, 2012

Dear David,

I am writing on behalf of my family to express our gratitude for the amazing tribute given to my father-in-law, Tony Cangiolosi, at his wake and funeral.

The support of family and friends who showed up at the wake was tremendous. Tears welled in our eyes as we watched the virtually endless stream of firefighters march in pairs and salute Tony at his wake.

There to Help

    Montauk

    April 17, 2012

To the Editor,

It’s 2 a.m. and you’re having difficulty breathing. Your chest feels like someone is sitting on it. Or perhaps your child has fallen from a bike and has a head wound. Maybe an accident has happened and you’re bleeding and it won’t stop. In all these cases, your first reaction is to dial 911 and call for an ambulance, and call you do.

Within minutes, no matter the time of day, any day of the year, the ambulance and crew arrive to render care.

Gone Now

    Amagansett

    April 11, 2012

To the Editor,

And to think I never believed the paradise of Cartwright Shoal would ever be taken away. Mrs. Rattray (“Connections,” April 5) and I have shared some glorious memories . . . and never even knew it! But she brought it all back to me with floods of remembered joys.

Fine Example

    East Hampton

    April 7, 2012

Dear Editor,

This is a note of congratulations to our elected officials in the Town of East Hampton, the County of Suffolk, and the State of New York.

Saturday I attended the grand opening of the Amsterdam Beach Loop (two miles) in the Amsterdam Beach State Park in Montauk. This 200-acre preserve provides a wonderful experience in nature with woodland, wetlands, and moorland, ending in a spectacular view of the bluffs and the beach.

Those Who Served

    East Hampton

    March 25, 2012

To the Editor,

It is time to start thinking about Memorial Day and what it truly means. At the end of February, in The Star you read about the Montauk artists and veterans associations in dispute about Memorial Day weekend. Someone stated that they represented 100 veterans; whether true or not I do not know.

All in Green

    Amagansett

    March 17, 2012

Dear David,

We were entertained at the Senior Citizens Center on Friday, with a St. Patrick’s Day party, by Michelle and her staff. It was a wonderful party, with a beautiful room decorated all in green. Very pretty! Children from the Springs School entertained us with their songs relating to St. Patrick, St. Paddy’s Day, and leprechauns.

They made and presented to us a decorated flower vase with a green carnation in it.

Affordable Project

    East Hampton

    February 27, 2012

Dear David:

Last week witnessed the formal groundbreaking of the St. Michael’s senior citizens affordable housing project. The leader of this extremely worthwhile undertaking is Michael DeSario, who has devoted countless hours over the last 10 years to the creation of needed, reasonably priced apartments for longtime East Hampton residents.

To Be Honored

    Springs

    February 17, 2012

David:

This past Wednesday, Feb. 15, a large group from East Hampton attended the reception given for Lee Hayes. The reception was given by the Riverhead Historical Society. The date and time of this event were well published in advance.

As most know, Lee is a Tuskegee airman — bombardier and pilot. He served at a time when racism was prevalent.

I would estimate the crowd attending numbered close to 200.

Nothing to Fear

    Springs

    February 10, 2012

Dear Editor,

I am the former managing editor of the New York Public Library, a book author, and an avid Kindle user of many years — so I read with interest Helen Rattray’s “Connections” column (Feb. 9) on her disenchantment with her Kindle and its possible threat to the traditional book. I continue to be surprised by the resistant view many serious readers take of the Kindle, even as it grows in popularity.

Tears of Joy

    Burnsville, N.C.

    February 6, 2012

To the Editor,

When we lived in East Hampton we knew it was one of the most beautiful places on earth. But the physical beauty is just the tip of the iceberg.

We wanted to thank our friends and neighbors for supporting us. Robert Curtis, who owned a leather-goods shop in East Hampton that eventually was known as Billy Martin, was in a devastating motorcycle accident last May.
