Bees Are Vital

    Amagansett

    May 9, 2014

To the Editor,

Thanks to Mary Woltz for her wonderful words about bees and dandelions. Everyone should hear what she has to say. Bees are vital to us for the services they provide of pollinating the flowers of plants we depend on for food, yet we damage their health and threaten their survival with our indiscriminate use of pesticides and herbicides to keep our lawns free of what we call weeds. Lawns don’t feed us.

Excitement of Art

    Springs

    May 4, 2014

Dear Editor,

We are proud to be members of the staff of the little school that could, Springs School. We recently were involved in the biggest fund-raiser the school or probably any school in this neighborhood has ever witnessed, the Mystery Art Show. It not only raised money for the Visiting Artist program, but it also energized an entire community around the excitement of art and its potential to inspire.

Dandelions and Bees

    Springs

    April 10, 2014

Dear Editor,

Hello, my name is Matthew Lester, and I am a ninth grader at East Hampton High School. I am also currently a Life Scout in B.S.A Troop 298.

Spring has arrived, which means that the bees will be looking for food so they can make honey. Most people don’t know that one of the important springtime food sources for pollinating insects are dandelions. Many people think of dandelions as prolific pests, but they really do have an important function.

What Matters Most

    East Hampton

    April 20, 2014

Dear David,

Last week while having dinner at a friend’s house, one of the guests suddenly keeled over and passed out. We called 911 and within minutes several police officers arrived with oxygen. A few minutes later E.M.S. appeared and brought our friend to Southampton Hospital, where he received a thorough cardiovascular workup. Fortunately, nothing warranting an overnight stay was found and he was able to leave.

Warm Feelings

    Sag Harbor

    April 14, 2014

To the Editor,

In the article in last week’s paper regarding the Jewish cemeteries on Route 114, my comments were referring to a century-old rivalry between two Jewish immigrant groups in Sag Harbor from Eastern and Central Europe.

Today, our entire Jewish community is largely united, and there is a warm, compatible relationship with all segments of East End Jewry.

These warm feelings include the relationship between our cemetery and the independent Jewish cemet

En Route to Rome

    East Hampton

    April 7, 2014

To the Editor:

By the time most of The Star’s readers see this letter, the East Hampton High School Camerata will be en route to Rome, where we will begin an eight-day performance tour with a performance in a Mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica, followed by performances in Lucca and Venice.

We, the members of the East Hampton High School Camerata, are writing to express our gratitude to this community for its tremendous support in our efforts to raise the money necessary for e

For Troubled Kids

    East Hampton

    March 27, 2014

David,

Thank you so much for your editorial “More Help Needed for Troubled Kids” in The Star today.

As a community, we must find a way forward to provide mental health services for our troubled youngsters.

Perhaps when your words reach the larger community, they too will understand the gravity of the situation.

Please note the East Hampton School Board has budgeted $5,000 during last week’s budget workshop meeting to support this initiative.

Parade Security

    Montauk

    March 24, 2014

Dear David,

I would like to thank the East Hampton Town Police Department and the other law enforcement agencies for doing a wonderful, efficient job in the security of the parade. It was very family oriented and extremely peaceful.

    Many thanks.

Dear David,

What a delightful and delicious evening was presented to East Hampton on Friday by the John M. Marshall School International Heritage Fair! What a gift! The parents, children, families, and staff of the school deserve our thanks and congratulations for an enormously successful event that showcased the music, dance, and cuisine of the many countries represented in the student body.

An Empty Seat

    Wainscott

    March 10, 2014

To the Editor,

It’s funny how grown men get up in the wee hours of the morning, rain or shine, or, in the case of this winter, snow, to meet for coffee. One such group met at the Golden Pear in East Hampton. I’m sad to say there is an empty seat now. On Feb. 21, a good friend and member of this group passed away.

His name was John Haessler, a former East Hampton teacher and owner of the Seafood Shop in Wainscott.

Caring Teacher

    Montauk

    March 2, 2014

Dear David:

Jane Schulte was a friend of mine. But long before our relationship developed into friendship, she was my fifth-grade teacher. When I look back on the 50 years of our interactions together, I see a remarkable person who invariably spoke her mind and let the chips fall where they might.

Mrs. Schulte was a dedicated teacher to me and to countless other children at the East Hampton Elementary School, later named after John M. Marshall, our much beloved principal.

A Happy Occasion

    Amagansett

    February 22, 2014

Dear David,

Bravo, Brava, to the handsome Dell Cullum, the beauteous Deb Klughers, the estimable Larry Cantwell, the trustees, the litter committee, and all those saintly volunteers who cleaned the shoreline today.

What a happy occasion: Sea gulls puffed with pride, my dog’s tail looked like a helicopter blade. I doubt heaven will provide a nicer sight.

Dear David,

Did you ever spend “Midnight at the Oasis” with Maria Muldaur, or go for a ride on “The Loco-Motion” with Grand Funk Railroad? Was your senior play “My Sister Eileen,” starring Miriam Markowitz and Nancy MacGarva? If the answer is yes, get ready for the East Hampton High School Class of 1974 40th Class Reunion on Sept.

Dear David:

‘Dogs Don’t Talk’

    New York City

    January 18, 2014

To the Editor:

Last Thursday morning at Guild Hall’s John Drew Theater, I and a packed audience of schoolchildren and adults went to the dogs and loved every minute of it.

As The Star noted, we were all “wowed” by “Dogs Don’t Talk,” this year’s production of the Springs School’s True Blue 52 Opera Company.

Taken Care Of

    East Hampton

    January 13, 2014

To the Editor,

On Saturday I was out on my walk, which I do every morning with my dog, Lexie. While on my walk I started to feel funny. I am a diabetic and it seems that my blood sugars were dropping very fast and I was experiencing low blood sugar.

During this time I met Barbara, another dog-walker. This lovely person seemed to notice that I was having a problem and walked me home and made sure that I was all right.

To the Editor:

I would like to thank Jimmy Daunt, Richie Daunt, Joseph Horton, and Cindy Dess for their tireless efforts decorating the 70 Christmas trees that line the downtown streets of Montauk for the past 12 years.

When I would see Richie and his crew replacing bulbs and fuses at night in the dark and cold, I knew firsthand what a tough job it was keeping those lights burning, especially in our Montauk winds and weather.

People Step Forward

    Springs

    December 22, 2013

Dear David,

On Nov. 21 I had revision surgery on my knee. The really different thing in this second-time-around operation for me is now I live alone. My children have been a great support during this time and have done what they were able to do within the confines of their work and family responsibilities. Thus I have had to rely on my neighbors in my Clearwater Beach area.

Betsy Ruth, the East Hampton librarian, has been a godsend.

To the Editor,

Okay, if you read The East Hampton Star this week under “Notices,” next to the last page there is a notice that a license is pending for beer and wine to sell retail in a sports arena under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law at 385 Abraham’s Path in Amagansett.

Well, folks, for your information, this is the indoor arena at the Terry King ballfield, a place originally set up for the youngsters of our community.

Close Calls at Sea

    Amagansett

    December 15, 2013

To the Editor,

As one dragger captain said, “We all have had our close calls at sea.”

The morning Billy and I left the dock on Billy the Kid to join the search for John from the Anna Mary is a day none of us will ever forget. Every boat has its own story to tell. When you are looking for someone in the ocean it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. The debris out there — balloons, garbage — every little thing catches your eye.

It is five months since our 14-year-old daughter, Anna Mirabai, was run over and killed on her bike near CVS in East Hampton. Not a day goes by, and rarely an hour, when she is not present in our thoughts and feelings, feelings of profound loss and great love.

Dear Editor,

I would like to say congratulations to Steve Redlus, the varsity “rookie” head coach of the E.H.H.S. football team. He took our high school football team to the playoffs this year. I have never heard of a rookie head coach doing this before. Our team did very well in spite of our record. The team and coaches helped each other to get ready for the games each week.
