To the Drivers East Hampton August 11, 2014 Dear David, As the anniversary of my car accident approaches I find myself hypersensitive to the drivers on our roads. Every time I look in the mirror I am reminded of the metal plate and four screws that are permanently in my neck from a giant yellow truck at the corner of Stephen Hand’s Path and Route 27.
For Jeff Bogetti My friend doesn’t live across anymore Won’t see him when I go out the door Can’t believe he’s still not there His presence still in the air His family so brokenhearted That Jeff, so young, has too soon departed Yet his joyful, protective soul remains Under which blissful peace still reigns GARY DUKOFSKY Dorothy King East Hampton July 28, 2014 Dear Editor, It was with real sadness t
Of Dorothy King Shutesbury, Mass. July 26, 2014 To the Editor: Carol and I will always have fond memories of Dorothy King, as she helped us so much with our research on Carol’s great-uncle and former village mayor, Jud Banister. We still have her first email from Nov. 15, 2008, where she says she pulled our letter to the editor from the previous May that had migrated to the bottom of the pile next to her computer.
Caught in a Rip Tide Shelter Island July 21, 2014 Dear Editor, I am a Shelter Island resident who had the pleasure of swimming at Indian Wells Beach last Thursday as the guest of an East Hampton friend. I grew up swimming in the ocean in Seabright, N.J., and consider myself a competent ocean swimmer, so, after checking with the lifeguards as to how long they were on duty, I plunged into the water. It was a perfect temperature, clear and clean, and with waves fun to dodge.
Debt of Gratitude East Hampton July 14, 2014 Dear David, I would like to congratulate the Amagansett Fire Department on its 100th anniversary. I would also like to thank Chief Dwayne Denton and the anniversary committee for inviting me to participate in the parade and celebration on Saturday. It was an honor and a privilege to be involved in such an outstanding event. The day was a tremendous reminder of what community and civic pride are all about.
Offensive Article Sag Harbor July 4, 2014 Dear Editor: The tone and point of view in Debra Scott’s front-page article “Portrait of a Neighborhood” are incredibly offensive. An immediate apology to Bridgehampton residents of that neighborhood is needed, and perhaps some follow-up articles on the lack of affordable housing on the East End. I could go on a point-by-point rant and rebuttal, but suffice it to say instead: You should be ashamed of yourselves! TIM McGUIRE
Wonders of Life Springs June 29, 2014 Dear David, Forty-five years here and Springs still delights us as we get to learn more of the history of the area and continue to cherish the residents, settings, and uniqueness of this wondrous community. Friday night was a dinner with friends at home and great conversations about school districts, housing, and other politically charged topics. No fisticuffs, all in good fun. Saturday presented us with a completely satisfying day of events.
A Garbage Disposal Montauk June 22, 2014 To the Editor, I am happy to learn of the efforts to combat pollution in Lake Montauk. The problems attendant upon the alarmingly growing and increasingly chemically dependent population that inhabits Montauk need to be addressed.
Complete Anarchy? Amagansett June 16, 2014 To the Editor, What is going on on our local roads? Has everyone lost it? Just this past Friday my husband and I were coming from Indian Wells Beach at 8:30 a.m.
Summer of Lyme Amagansett June 3, 2014 To the Editor, This is basically a letter of thanks to Dr. Blake Kerr, who not only wrote an understandable article on the wickedness of Lyme disease, but whom I believe saved my life last summer. I was a victim of all the terrifying symptoms Dr. Kerr described concerning his long and painful summer — a summer that seemed just endless agony — and I’m sure I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for his wise counsel. Dr. Kerr never abandoned me — not once.
Reading Pleasure East Northport May 31, 2014 Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the many hours of reading pleasure I have gotten from your paper over the years. Although I cannot trace my roots back to the Montaukett Indians or even Poseyville, I can say that I first went out to Montauk when I was a kid back in 1969, and still come out every year from about June through at least Halloween to fish for bass, fluke, and bluefish. I started out on Jones Reef with my cousin
Passing the Budget East Hampton May 23, 2014 Dear Editor: On behalf of the board of education and the district staff of the East Hampton Union Free School District, I would like to thank the community for its overwhelming support in passing the 2014-15 school budget. This approved budget will enable us to continue to provide a quality education for all of our children. Sincerely yours, RICHARD J.
Shakespearian Challenge Springs May 14, 2014 Dear Editor, I am a sixth grader and I recently participated in the Shakespearian Oratorical Challenge at Springs School. I would like to state that even though all the participants who performed soliloquies did very well, it was only the tip of the iceberg of what Shakespeare has written. From my experience I can’t wait to read or (better yet) see more of Shakespeare’s tragedies and comedies.
Bees Are Vital Amagansett May 9, 2014 To the Editor, Thanks to Mary Woltz for her wonderful words about bees and dandelions. Everyone should hear what she has to say. Bees are vital to us for the services they provide of pollinating the flowers of plants we depend on for food, yet we damage their health and threaten their survival with our indiscriminate use of pesticides and herbicides to keep our lawns free of what we call weeds. Lawns don’t feed us.
Excitement of Art Springs May 4, 2014 Dear Editor, We are proud to be members of the staff of the little school that could, Springs School. We recently were involved in the biggest fund-raiser the school or probably any school in this neighborhood has ever witnessed, the Mystery Art Show. It not only raised money for the Visiting Artist program, but it also energized an entire community around the excitement of art and its potential to inspire.
Dandelions and Bees Springs April 10, 2014 Dear Editor, Hello, my name is Matthew Lester, and I am a ninth grader at East Hampton High School. I am also currently a Life Scout in B.S.A Troop 298. Spring has arrived, which means that the bees will be looking for food so they can make honey. Most people don’t know that one of the important springtime food sources for pollinating insects are dandelions. Many people think of dandelions as prolific pests, but they really do have an important function.
What Matters Most East Hampton April 20, 2014 Dear David, Last week while having dinner at a friend’s house, one of the guests suddenly keeled over and passed out. We called 911 and within minutes several police officers arrived with oxygen. A few minutes later E.M.S. appeared and brought our friend to Southampton Hospital, where he received a thorough cardiovascular workup. Fortunately, nothing warranting an overnight stay was found and he was able to leave.
Warm Feelings Sag Harbor April 14, 2014 To the Editor, In the article in last week’s paper regarding the Jewish cemeteries on Route 114, my comments were referring to a century-old rivalry between two Jewish immigrant groups in Sag Harbor from Eastern and Central Europe. Today, our entire Jewish community is largely united, and there is a warm, compatible relationship with all segments of East End Jewry. These warm feelings include the relationship between our cemetery and the independent Jewish cemet
En Route to Rome East Hampton April 7, 2014 To the Editor: By the time most of The Star’s readers see this letter, the East Hampton High School Camerata will be en route to Rome, where we will begin an eight-day performance tour with a performance in a Mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica, followed by performances in Lucca and Venice. We, the members of the East Hampton High School Camerata, are writing to express our gratitude to this community for its tremendous support in our efforts to raise the money necessary for e
For Troubled Kids East Hampton March 27, 2014 David, Thank you so much for your editorial “More Help Needed for Troubled Kids” in The Star today. As a community, we must find a way forward to provide mental health services for our troubled youngsters. Perhaps when your words reach the larger community, they too will understand the gravity of the situation. Please note the East Hampton School Board has budgeted $5,000 during last week’s budget workshop meeting to support this initiative.
Parade Security Montauk March 24, 2014 Dear David, I would like to thank the East Hampton Town Police Department and the other law enforcement agencies for doing a wonderful, efficient job in the security of the parade. It was very family oriented and extremely peaceful. Many thanks. JIMMY HEWITT L.V.I.S.
Music, Dance, Cuisine Amagansett March 15, 2014 Dear David, What a delightful and delicious evening was presented to East Hampton on Friday by the John M. Marshall School International Heritage Fair! What a gift! The parents, children, families, and staff of the school deserve our thanks and congratulations for an enormously successful event that showcased the music, dance, and cuisine of the many countries represented in the student body.
An Empty Seat Wainscott March 10, 2014 To the Editor, It’s funny how grown men get up in the wee hours of the morning, rain or shine, or, in the case of this winter, snow, to meet for coffee. One such group met at the Golden Pear in East Hampton. I’m sad to say there is an empty seat now. On Feb. 21, a good friend and member of this group passed away. His name was John Haessler, a former East Hampton teacher and owner of the Seafood Shop in Wainscott.
Caring Teacher Montauk March 2, 2014 Dear David: Jane Schulte was a friend of mine. But long before our relationship developed into friendship, she was my fifth-grade teacher. When I look back on the 50 years of our interactions together, I see a remarkable person who invariably spoke her mind and let the chips fall where they might. Mrs. Schulte was a dedicated teacher to me and to countless other children at the East Hampton Elementary School, later named after John M. Marshall, our much beloved principal.
A Happy Occasion Amagansett February 22, 2014 Dear David, Bravo, Brava, to the handsome Dell Cullum, the beauteous Deb Klughers, the estimable Larry Cantwell, the trustees, the litter committee, and all those saintly volunteers who cleaned the shoreline today. What a happy occasion: Sea gulls puffed with pride, my dog’s tail looked like a helicopter blade. I doubt heaven will provide a nicer sight.
Did the Beatles Proud Springs February 11, 2014 To the Editor: In the early ’70s I was working for Channel 13 in New York. The late-night program “Free Time” asked if some staff would stick around to be an audience for one of their eclectic shows. I went over to Studio 55 (Ninth Avenue and 55th Street) around 11 p.m.
Class of ’74 Reunion East Hampton February 10, 2014 Dear David, Did you ever spend “Midnight at the Oasis” with Maria Muldaur, or go for a ride on “The Loco-Motion” with Grand Funk Railroad? Was your senior play “My Sister Eileen,” starring Miriam Markowitz and Nancy MacGarva? If the answer is yes, get ready for the East Hampton High School Class of 1974 40th Class Reunion on Sept.
Bunyonesque Montauk February 3, 2014 Dear David: Despicable and deplorable aren’t strong enough to describe the arrogant act of Public Service Enterprise Group Long Island, an unbridled bureaucracy, that as a new kid on the block took it upon itself to chop down our trees without asking the taxpayers whether we liked the idea and whether there might be other less-severe solutions to make their job for us easier for them. A bit of trivia that makes this matter so ludicrous is that we people who live here and love ou
Thank You, Steve East Hampton January 21, 2014 Dear David, A public “can’t thank you enough” to Steve Lynch, our highway superintendent, for caring for our town and its people and to your dedicated crew — all of you getting the job done for us no matter what. Leadership and service, yet another one of East Hampton’s finest kind. LONA RUBENSTEIN On Town Pond East Hampton January 26, 2014 To the Editor: What happe
