Loss of Beach

    Montauk

    October 13, 2013

Dear Editor,

I was relieved to see your editorial regarding the proposal to armor and replenish the beach in Montauk. The Army Corps’s proposal has the potential to waste a lot of taxpayer money, but more important for local residents, it has the potential to destroy any possibility of having a sandy beach in Montauk.

Falsely Accused

    Amagansett

    October 12, 2013

Dear Mr. Rattray,

Regarding Jason Gutterman’s letter (Oct. 10), in response to my own, in the last issue of The Star, I believe he is as bad a writer as he is a disgrace to the reputation of the School of Visual Arts.

Mr. Gutterman offers a tired rehash of some of my past reversals and egregious public missteps. I would like to address just one. In February of this year, a New York Post photographer accused me of calling him a racial epithet.

Always There for Us

    East Hampton

    October 2, 2013

Dear Editor,

Recently, for the third time in the 36 years I have lived in East Hampton, I had to call on the emergency services of our volunteer ambulance corps, and for the third time in 36 years, I found them efficient, professional, caring, and consoling.

Fishing on the Favorite

    East Hampton

    September 20, 2013

To the Editor:

I enjoyed seeing news on the fishing smack Favorite in “The Way it Was‚” 125 Years Ago, column this week.

My great-grandfather Oliver Sayre Osborn went to work on the Favorite in 1874 at the age of 21, making $30 a month. We have family letters that Oliver’s mother, Adelia, sent him while he was fishing on the Favorite.

Adelia wrote: “I see you have been enjoying yourself.

Prevent Kitchen Fires

    East Hampton

    September 24, 2013

Dear Mr. Rattray:

The Town of East Hampton fire marshal’s office would like to remind everyone that Oct. 6 through Oct. 12 is National Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is Prevent Kitchen Fires.

Many families gather in the kitchen to spend time together, but it can be one of the most hazardous rooms in the house if you don’t practice safe cooking behaviors.

 Good Will and Kindness

    Springs

    September 16, 2013

Dear David:

The other day I lost my wallet — a wallet that had belonged to my late mother — and everything in it.

At the Buckskill Tennis Club, I had put it on the trunk of my husband’s car as we talked following an arduous workout, and were changing cars.

When I remembered I’d put it there, he had pulled out of the driveway, on his way to do some errands in the village after stopping at The Star.

Later, having retraced his route from Buckskill to

Army of Caregivers

    California

    August 27, 2013

Dear David:

I am writing to express my gratitude to the East End community for the care and kind concern that was shown to my dad toward the end of his life. The last few years were challenging due to various factors — my being his only child and living in California was one, and his declining health and occasional confusion were others.

Two Caring Souls

    East Hampton

    August 29, 2013

Dear David,

As my Jeep’s rear left tire shredded and fumed to the tune of the Montauk-bound L.I.R.R. cars noisily parallel to Montauk Highway along the Napeague strip — or were they? — my scarlet vehicle, and speaking engagement, came to an abrupt halt.

Among the endless stream of careening cars heading east last Wednesday, first to stop to help was:

    1. The greatest Good Samaritan of them all, Bulgarian Vinny the personal trainer!

Wall of Vehicles

    Springs

    August 26, 2013

David,

There are some people who are portraying the argument over beach parking on the Maidstone loop as a conflict between locals and folks from away. It might be — but not as perceived.

Imagine you grew up in Maidstone Park and went to this beach all your life.

Lee Davis, Director

    East Hampton

    August 19, 2013

To the Editor,

Lee Davis, whose obituary appeared in last week’s Star, was an important part of our community, as he was the director of choice at LTV for nearly all the  independent producers at LTV, including myself.

After retiring from a distinguished career in television and advertising, as noted in his obituary, Lee became an active and major director at LTV, our town’s public access television station.

'You Are My Hero’

    East Hampton

    August 12, 2013

To the Editor,

I would like to share my experience yesterday.

I was helping at a brunch here in East Hampton and one of the guests was Gabby Gifford. Just to see her I was full of emotion. I helped her up two steps and said to her softly, “You are my hero.” She held on to my hand very tightly. I gave her a glass of O.J.

Later, about two hours passed and everyone started to leave.

Emergency Preparedness

    East Hampton

    August 4, 2013

Dear David,

One of the lessons learned during Superstorm Sandy was how difficult it is to stay informed once the storm has hit. Many of us lost power for days, even weeks, and had no idea of where to go to charge our phones, replenish water containers, or find bathrooms. Not everyone was aware of the Red Cross shelter at the high school, and so it was underutilized.

Support Our Fishermen

    Montauk

    July 25, 2013

To the Editor:

Yesterday in Montauk, while many vacationers were enjoying our beaches, restaurants, and clubs, locals were holding their breath. One of our own fishermen was missing at sea. I was doing my morning swim when eight Coast Guard helicopters flew overhead. I got a very bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Memories of Jim

    East Hampton

    July 22, 2013

To the Editor:

We want to thank Abby Jane Brody for her beautifully articulated memories of our friend Jim Jeffrey. Her words captured our memories and thoughts which we will continue to have about Jim.

On our most recent visit with Jim a few weeks ago, we did the grand tour of the garden, enjoying his incredible knowledge of horticulture, the specifics of his collection, and all the wonderful stories that went along. And of course, we did not leave empty-handed.

Sense of Community

    Springs

    July 12, 2013

Dear David,

For almost 40 years we lived peacefully in Springs until July 7, when we returned from the beach to find our house on fire. It was a terrifying experience. The house was pretty much destroyed, but, thankfully, nobody was hurt.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the firefighters from the Amagansett, East Hampton, and Springs fire departments — our neighbors and friends.

Soldier Ride

    New York City

    July 6, 2013

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your inspirational, informative, but incomplete article on the 10th anniversary of Soldier Ride the Hamptons.

Certainly one of the reasons Soldier Ride is a sacred day for those of us who are fortunate enough to live on the East End, is that it is named for a true Sag Harbor hero, Navy Cross recipient Lance Cpl. Jordan Haerter.

    July 1, 2013

Dear David,

Wonderful Program

    East Hampton

    June 20, 2013

Dear Editor:

The preschool at the Neighborhood House, located on Three Mile Harbor Road in East Hampton, is a wonderful program for 3 and 4-year-olds. It runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. There is a wide variety of activities planned throughout the year and they have delightful creative performances where the little tots really belt out a tune.

A Girl of Many Talents

    Hampton Bays

    June 16, 2013

Dear David,

My heart is heavy as I write this, just one day after Anna Lytton’s life was snuffed out while riding her bike. She was in my fifth-grade class at Springs School and I wanted to let readers know a little about her.

Anna was gentle and wise. She, a girl of many talents, generously shared her gifts. A natural teacher, Anna patiently mentored second-grade buddies in technology.

Support Good Causes

    East Hampton

    June 3, 2013

Editor,

As the summer season becomes one giant listing of fund-raisers, and we all want to attend and support good causes of every ilk, please keep in mind that many of the charities looking for support do nothing to provide service to our local community or offer financial support to those local organizations that do.

Take a moment and research the fund-raisers that you plan on attending. If they do not support locals and their needs, it might be nice to look for one that does.

Aspects of the Story

    Sagaponack

    June 3, 2013

To the Editor,

Will your next article be on how the Long Island Rail Road allows overcrowding to the point where there is no way to pass through an aisle or stairway in an emergency?

Or their liability in over-serving and setting drunk and/or underaged passengers out to kill the rest of us on the roads later?

Or will you cover how code enforcement is allowing share houses?

Readers will definitely be interested in these aspects of the story!

Dear Community Residents:

I would like to offer gratitude and congratulations to our community today.

On behalf of the administration and the Board of Education of the East Hampton School District, I want to thank everyone who took the time to come out and show their support for our 2013-14 budget, which passed by a large margin.

Sad Commentary

    Springs

    May 19, 2013

Dear Editor,

We’ve all read a bumper sticker that says “My [son or daughter] is an honor student at [one school or other].” Good for that proud parent and that hard-working student.

Today, on a street in East Hampton Village, I read a bumper sticker that said “My yellow lab is smarter then your honor student.” That’s a sad commentary indeed.

    May 13, 2013

Dear David,

This past Saturday evening, current and former students of East Hampton High School staged a legendary performance as a tribute to their famed theater director, Serena Seacat. In honor of Serena’s achievements and tremendous generosity during her tenure with the district, this event helped to establish a scholarship fund in her name, the Serena Seacat Theater Arts Scholarship.

All But Gone

    East Hampton

    April 29, 2013

Dear Editor,

I saw something today driving home from work that made me a little melancholy. On the L.I.E., right before the Manorville exit, there in the grass median was a cock pheasant. It caught my attention because I haven’t seen one for quite awhile. It made me think, where have all the pheasants gone?

    April 15, 2013

To the Editor:

At any point in time, for whatever reason — a fall, a stroke, that scary pain in your chest that doesn’t go away, perhaps an automobile accident you hadn’t planned on, a boating accident, even the fishhook or knife incident gone astray, whatever — you do the 911 call, and within minutes the flashing light of an ambulance, the siren cutting the quiet air, and help is there.

Respect the Beaches

    East Hampton

    April 15, 2013

To the Editor,

The summer season is fast approaching and as the weather begins to warm, so does debate concerning the continuation of various time-held rights and traditions on the East End. Citizens for Access Rights is a grassroots, nonpolitical organization whose genesis was in response to the public access to our shorelines being threatened.

    April 7, 2013

To the Editor,

I had the special privilege of attending a Holocaust Memorial ceremony at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons on Sunday. The proceedings were dignified and captured the feeling of sadness and renewal. The speaker was very effective in telling stories of survival and defiance.
