Two Days

    East Hampton

    August 19, 2012

To the Editor:

The bemoaning of the dirt, noise, and traffic by the couple in last week’s Star prompted me to take a drive down Daniel’s Lane in Sagaponack. Indeed, it is true. That street is a slum.

I recalled the time I first started work on Butter Lane in Bridgehampton. Across the street was a potato-sorting barn and every fall its machinery would crank up in the morning.

People Who Care

    Springs

    August 13, 2012

Dear Editor,

There are caring people in this town.

Last Sunday our sheltie, Misty, who is 141/2 years old and deaf, got out of the yard and decided to take herself for a walk. After a couple of hours, which felt like forever, a wonderful couple with a white car was waiting by our house with our Misty. The couple found her over by Glade Road and brought her home. Thank you so much for caring to return Misty to us.

We recently attended the lovely and moving memorial service for Nancy Kane. She was such a vibrant person and one of our library’s first and most loyal supporters and volunteers.

Best Show Ever

    East Hampton

    July 22, 2012

Dear Editor,

Last night we saw fireworks over Three Mile Harbor hosted by the Clamshell Foundation. The fireworks were unique and colorful. This was the best show ever. We were lucky to be able to enjoy such a display in such a beautiful setting.

Facing Traffic

    Sagaponack

    July 16, 2012

To the Editor:

The editorial in the July 12 issue of The East Hampton Star is important. I would just like to add that if the following rule were adopted and adhered to, perhaps, some of these tragic incidents could be avoided: Pedestrians should walk in single file facing traffic, and bicyclists should ride in single file with traffic.

Killing Season

    Springs

    July 1, 2012

To the Editor,

To whom the rules do not apply: At the beginning of every summer season for at least the last 15 years, I’ve told myself I should write a letter to the editor reminding people about the rules of the road. But I never have. Until this year. The death of that high school student on Old Stone Highway was the catalyst. I was diverted both going to, and hours later, coming from Atlantic Avenue Beach that day because of that particular accident.

Taxi Situation

    East Hampton

    June 28, 2012

Dear Editor,

The death last week of the young man who was struck and killed by a taxi on Old Stone Highway and your editorial “Thoughts After a Death,” provoked me to write you about the taxi situation on the East End.

Over the years we’ve watched each summer the influx of both taxi companies and individual taxis on our streets in greater numbers.

Out of Their Way

    East Hampton

     June 11, 2012

Dear Readers:

A week ago Sunday I was out and about doing errands and lost two letters, ready for mailing, from my purse. Of course, they contained checks, and of course, it was raining, so they got wet if they were dropped outside, and of course it was Sunday and the post office was closed.

Its Fair Share

    Springs

    June 4, 2012

Dear David,

Back in the day (Bastille Day, that is), it was quite a show, with George Plimpton and, later, James Lipton, dedicating the shells. We sat in boats and gave money for a great night; other times we went ashore and gave more money to be on the grounds for a good cause, Boys Harbor. Then it all just ended almost abruptly.

The Clamshell Foundation came to the rescue, no questions asked.
