When he started East Hampton Vacuums 25 years ago on North Main Street, Martin O’Brien and his then-business partner, George Harvey, saw a niche that needed to be filled. “I always say, dirt is universal,” Mr. O’Brien said last week, and the desire to mop it, sweep it, or suck it up is pretty much universal, too.
Mr. O’Brien, now the sole owner, had been a door-to-door Electrolux salesman based in Riverhead. Mr. Harvey delivered door-to-door for Electrolux and did repairs out of his basement. They teamed up in the summer of 1987 to open their own place.
David J. Gilmartin Jr., Eric Bregman, and David J. Gilmartin Sr., former partners at their namesake Southampton law firm, have joined Farrell Fritz in Bridgehampton. Amy M. Murphy has joined the firm’s Hauppauge office.

Remember, No Tax!
State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle reminded parents this week as they shop for back-to-school clothes that New York State has repealed its sales tax on clothing purchases up to $110.
The repeal went into effect in the spring and is expected to save the average family nearly $200 a year, according to a release from the senator’s office.
Leather and Wine
Robert Anderson, the head of security at the Sloppy Tuna nightclub in Montauk, has confiscated over 200 forms of fake identification so far this season, he said on Sunday. The expertise he has acquired during his 26 years as a full-time bouncer also helps the other bars in town, he said, since those under-age hopefuls will no longer have the false documents to try to get in elsewhere.

“You guys are our favorite part of East Hampton!” said a satisfied customer of Hamptons Free Ride as she hopped into the back seat of one of the shuttles on its way back to town from the beach. And from the complimentary snacks and giveaways, electric, eco-friendly shuttles, and engaging drivers who open doors for you, all the way to the titular no-charge rides, it’s easy to understand why she felt that way.
The brainchild of James Mirras and Alex Esposito, the shuttle service runs in fixed loops in East Hampton and Montauk, and has recently expanded to Amagansett.

Eco-Chic
Sweet ’tauk, Montauk’s juice haven now in its second year of operations, will try its hand at sweetening up the hamlet’s fashions. A pop-up shop at its 34 South Etna Avenue store will show off Made in Montauk, a locally made eco-chic clothing line which boasts organic hand-dyed and hand-block printed designs. There will be an opening reception at the shop tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The sale runs through Friday, Aug. 24.
Summery Bling
Wherever she lives, Dana Forbes sets up a studio for her jewelry-making business. Right now that studio is in a sparely decorated, mostly white room in Montauk that is accented by her signature color, purple, on gift boxes wrapped in silver ribbon and waiting to be filled.
“So it looks like a beautiful gift from the outside too,” she said on Monday, dressed in a colorful caftan, her hands resting on her pregnant belly.
Protecting Baby Bums
After failing to find effective and chemical-free sunscreen for her two young children, Kristen Peterson of East Hampton, the founder of babyhampton, decided to create her own, and this summer launched the beach*bum S.P.F. 30 sunscreen and sunstick line for babies.
It may be the second week of August, but it’s not too late to rent a house on the East End.
Depending on the firm, a search on a real estate company’s Web site will render between 400 to around 500 available rentals from Montauk to Water Mill. Each company compiles its own rental listings, but according to Lynn Epstein, an owner and director of sales at Devlin McNiff Halstead Property in East Hampton, 80 percent of them overlap between agencies.
New Owners for UPS Store
The UPS Store at 81 Newtown Lane in East Hampton Village is under new ownership. Chet Borgida, a retired financial executive, has taken over the store with his wife, Susan, a senior executive for a healthcare management firm.
This is the couple’s first entrepreneurial venture. They plan to expand their services to include online printing and other business services. Greg Simmons will stay on as manager and Diane Peralta as assistant manager.
Mr. Borgida has been an East Hampton homeowner since 1983.
